The Body Roundness Index (BRI) estimates how round your body is by modelling it as an ellipse, using only your waist circumference and your height. Unlike BMI, it does not use your weight, and it puts your waist front and centre, which is where visceral fat tends to gather. What is the BRI Calculator?
BRI comes from a 2013 paper by Diana M. Thomas and colleagues, published in the journal Obesity. The idea is simple: your body can be approximated by an ellipse, and the "roundness" of that ellipse is captured by the ratio between your waist circumference and your height. A slim, tall person traces a narrow ellipse and gets a low BRI, while a shorter person with a larger waist traces a rounder ellipse and gets a higher BRI. The output is a single number that typically ranges from about 1 to 16.
The reason researchers proposed BRI is that BMI has a well-known blind spot: it uses weight and height but ignores where fat sits on your body. Two people can share the same BMI while one carries fat around the hips and the other around the belly, even though belly (visceral) fat carries more health risk. Because BRI is driven by waist circumference, it is designed to reflect central fat and visceral adipose tissue more directly than BMI does. Importantly, BRI does not use your weight at all, so a change in the number reflects a change in your waist relative to your height.
The formula behind BRI is geometric. In plain terms, it takes the ratio of your waist (converted to an ellipse radius) to half your height, squares it, subtracts that from 1, takes the square root, and scales the result. Because that square-root term can go slightly negative for very large waists, a good calculator clamps it to zero so the result never breaks. Both inputs must be in the same unit; this tool converts centimetres and inches to metres for you before doing the maths.
BRI is promising but young. The exact cut-off values that separate healthy from unhealthy roundness are still being studied, and different research groups report slightly different quintile bands. Treat the categories on this page as an approximate guide, not a diagnosis. For anything that matters, pair BRI with other measures such as BMI, waist-to-height ratio, blood pressure and a conversation with a clinician.

Worked examples
An adult with an 85 cm waist and a height of 170 cm (the default inputs).
- Convert to metres: WC = 0.85 m, H = 1.70 m.
- WC / (2 x pi) = 0.85 / 6.2832 = 0.1353.
- 0.5 x H = 0.85. Ratio = 0.1353 / 0.85 = 0.1591.
- Ratio squared = 0.0253. 1 minus that = 0.9747. Square root = 0.9873.
- BRI = 364.2 minus 365.5 x 0.9873 = 364.2 minus 360.84.
Result: BRI is about 3.36, which sits in the low roundness band under 3.5.
An adult with a larger 100 cm waist at the same 175 cm height.
- Convert to metres: WC = 1.00 m, H = 1.75 m.
- WC / (2 x pi) = 1.00 / 6.2832 = 0.1592.
- 0.5 x H = 0.875. Ratio = 0.1592 / 0.875 = 0.1819.
- Ratio squared = 0.0331. 1 minus that = 0.9669. Square root = 0.9833.
- BRI = 364.2 minus 365.5 x 0.9833 = 364.2 minus 359.40.
Result: BRI is about 4.80, higher than the first example because the waist is larger relative to height.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring the waist in the wrong place. Measure at the level of your belly button, not at the narrowest point or over the hips. Keep the tape horizontal and snug without squeezing, and measure at the end of a normal breath out.
- Mixing units. Entering waist in centimetres but height in inches (or the reverse) gives a meaningless number. Pick metric or imperial and keep both measurements in the same system.
- Expecting weight to matter. BRI does not use your weight at all. If your BRI has not moved, it is because your waist has not changed relative to your height, even if the scale has.
- Treating the band as a diagnosis. BRI cut-offs are still being researched and vary between studies. A high band is a prompt to look closer with a doctor, not a medical verdict on its own.

There is no firm cut-off yet, but many adults fall in a rough 3.5 to 5.5 range that this tool labels "normal". Lower values mean a slimmer profile relative to height. Because the science is still developing, treat any band as a guide rather than a target.
How is BRI different from BMI?
BMI uses your weight and height and ignores where fat sits. BRI uses your waist and height and no weight at all, so it is built to reflect central and visceral fat. They answer different questions, which is why it helps to look at both.
Does BRI use my weight?
